Friends love to visit and I love visitors. When a girlfriend comes, I try to make her visit special. With a little advance planning both of us will have a visit to remember.

Search out local goodies…

Since you know she’s coming, head to the farmer’s markets, local gift galleries and shops with a local flavor and focus. Collect a variety of pieces unique to your area. For instance, I live in Northern California. We have local olive oil and balsamic vinegars, some with interesting flavors. Of course, there is always a great selection of delightful Napa Valley wines available. If you know your girlfriend has to fly home, invest in some foam shippers that will fit in her checked luggage.

Make her write…

Journals come in plenty of sizes and types. Find one that fits her personality, add a glow in the dark pen and suggest she take notes. You could even start the first page for her with a “what I’ve done to prepare for your visit” or “clues to the sights you are going to see”.

Make her read…

Unless you know she just doesn’t read, grab a copy of the latest book. Try to get one she wouldn’t buy for herself or one so crazy you will both have a great laugh. Maybe she’s a great cook. Look for the newest cookbook from your area. Perhaps fashion magazines or entrepreneur ones are more her style. See if you can find the latest ones and toss a couple of them on her bed. You could always include a clever bookmark.

Show her the terrain…

Purse size guidebooks make an awesome special treat. You could even highlight places you are going to visit while she is there. While you’re at it, grab a map of your area. You may be using a GPS to get around but a map puts it in perspective for her.

Toast her feet…

How about a comfy pair of sox or slippers to keep her toes warm while you sit outside by the fire? Too cold outside? She can use them around the house while you’re sipping wine by the fireplace.

Speaking of wine…

If wine is something you both enjoy, why not send her home with a souvenir wine glass? She will remember the trip every time she has a glass when she gets home.

Dinner is served…

For fun I always include an “invitation to dinner”. Make it special by printing on heavy paper or a nice note card. Word it as if you were being invited to a state dinner at the White House, including courses and wines. Add the date, place, time and appropriate attire. For fun, add an R.S.V.P.

Package all in a wicker basket, or a souvenir bag, or a cardboard box…whatever works for you. The point is…it’s a “welcome to my house” gift.

Enjoy your visit.
