Moss Adams LLP Named Among “Best Accounting Firms for Women”

"Hands"Firm Recognized for Setting Standards and Removing Barriers for Women in the Workplace

Moss Adams LLP was named one of the nation’s best firms for women accountants for a second consecutive year by the Accounting MOVE Project in its annual study. With 20 offices in five Western states, Moss Adams was recognized for the effectiveness of Forum_W, the firm’s effort to attract, retain, develop and advance women within the organization.

The Accounting MOVE Project is managed by Wilson-Taylor Associates Inc., a specialist in measuring the advancement of women in business. Firms were ranked on the range, depth and success of their workplace cultures and programs that are proven to remove barriers to women’s success, especially at midlevel and above. This year’s study specifically examined how women millennials are shaping the future of public accounting.

The study commended Moss Adams for raising retention rates of women across nearly every segment in the firm and for its higher-than-industry-average share of women partners — currently at 22 percent. The firm was also credited with setting transparency standards in how it measured and reported on the status of women.

“It’s a privilege to be recognized in this study,” said Tammy Young, managing director of human resources at Moss Adams. “Even in a tough economy the firm has maintained its focus on Forum_W, and it continues to gain momentum with a commitment from leadership and a robust business process that keeps our efforts on track.”

Career coaching is one of the most successful tools Moss Adams uses to retain and advance women to the next level of their careers. These relationships have proved particularly important in providing women with a consistent message about their performance and future with the firm. Career coaching becomes even more critical for midlevel women as they begin to look at the next step in their careers.

Overall key findings of the Accounting MOVE Project include:

• Male millennials expect women to be business leaders, and women millennials expect male peers to be equitably included in all development and work-life programs.

• Women are making incremental gains at top levels as they bring in new clients through innovative business development programs.

• Firms that publicly communicate a commitment to women build credibility with clients, employees and potential recruits.

• Women expect to gain partner-track skills more quickly at regional and local firms.

The 2011 list of Best Accounting Firms for Women is drawn from 25 firms that participated in the study. The MOVE methodology focused on four factors — money, opportunity, vital work-life support and entrepreneurship — known to advance women in the workplace. Study sponsors include the American Society of Women Accountants and the American Women’s Society of Certified Public Accountants, two leading professional organizations dedicated to advancing women in public accounting.
