Meet Kimra Major-Morris, CEO of Major-Morris Law, LLC
Tell us about your business…
Major-Morris Law, LLC is a boutique intellectual property and entertainment law firm that primarily serves the creative community and brand owners. It s mission is to assist with the protection and monetization of clients’ talent, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets.
Please tell us what being a business owner means to you and why you became an entrepreneur in the first place?
Being a business owner means I have the privilege of maximizing the use of my time and talent s to serve clients, spend time with family, seek opportunities for growth, and provide community service.
What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why? My father has been my greatest influence in business, because he taught me that business is about relationships. In building relationships, I have broken barriers, grown my network of clients, mentors, and referral sources.
What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?
In 2009, I self-published a book about copyright infringement in churches and traveled throughout the country lecturing church leaders and technology departments as an advocate for creative contributors not compensated for the unauthorized use of their content in streamed church services.
What’s the best advice you have received in business that you wish to pass on to our readers?
Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. I am excited and grateful for opportunity to serve people who create things and change our world a little bit every day through their creative works.
What has been the most effective marketing initiatives or programs you have used to promote your business?
I am the best marketing tool for my business. Meeting clients and potential clients face to face, whether through networking events or lunch dates, has been the most effective marketing I’ve done. I’ve learned that people hire me after we’ve made an emotional connection.
What one thing have you learned as a small business owner that has served you well over the years?
I’ve learned to say no. I focus on a specialized practice area and decline work that is outside that scope. My clients are better served and I am simultaneously building my brand as a trusted intellectual property attorney.
Are there any resources or tools you’d like to share with other small business?
The best resource for me has been other intellectual property practitioners. My involvement with The Florida Bar’s Intellectual Property committee has been invaluable to my practice. Through the committee, I’ve found mentors who are board certified in intellectual property and have had ongoing access to continuing legal education courses in my practice areas.
Do you have any new projects coming up? If so, please tell us about it.
I am celebrating my third consecutive year on the Super Lawyers Florida Rising Star list, a designation held by no more than 2.5% of attorneys in each state.
What do you do for fun/relaxation?
I enjoy exercise, photography, video editing, art, watching movies based on true events, roller skating, and African dance classes with live drummers. For relaxation, I enjoy reading, spending time at the beach, and spending time with friends and family.
What is Number One Business Goal you plan to accomplish over the next year?
This year, I plan to double last year’s profits by more targeted networking. Growth, so far, has been through word of mouth and its online presence through Super Lawyers.
You want to write a book on ….
the importance of intellectual property ownership, using case studies with small business owners who experienced life-changing circumstances through IP monetization.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’m grateful for the opportunity to do what I love. Intellectual property practice is my way of celebrating my clients’ creative and economic contributions to the world we live in.
