Les Baux

by Wendy VanHatten

Les Baux-de-Provence is a picturesque village perched atop a rocky plateau in the Alpilles mountain range in southern France. It is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, about 15 kilometers from Arles and 30 kilometers from Avignon. The village is known for its stunning views of the surrounding countryside, historical significance, and well-preserved medieval architecture.

Les Baux-de-Provence has a rich history that dates back to prehistoric times, with evidence of human habitation going back thousands of years. The village played a strategic role during the medieval period, and its fortified castle, Château des Baux, was a powerful stronghold. The castle and village were once the seat of the powerful lords of Baux, who ruled over the region for centuries.

When you approach the perched outcropping known as Les Baux, you will see the reason Les Baux-de-Provence has always given its inhabitants great views. Once at the top you can see for miles in every direction.

Les Baux has been a site that’s been continuously inhabited from prehistoric times to now. In fact, the name baux means escarpment.

Sadly, few archaeological remains still exist in the deep valleys and steep sided plateaus. Once this was a thriving farming and trading community, well into Roman times. When transportation routes developed, Les Baus became important in mining and quarrying.

Definitely worth a visit and a trip through the village to the top of the massive plateau. Take some time to explore life as it was in this historic village.

If You Go: Les Baux is located about 45 minutes south of Avignon.

In addition to its historical and cultural attractions, Les Baux-de-Provence is also known for its beautiful natural surroundings. The village is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and limestone cliffs, making it a great destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. The nearby Alpilles Regional Natural Park offers a wealth of opportunities to explore the region’s unique flora and fauna.

With its combination of history, culture, and natural beauty, Les Baux-de-Provence is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the Provence region.
