The “last weekend” of summer is here and there is no way you want to end your summer with a sunburn. In order to protect yourself during Labor Day weekend festivities, Dr. Elizabeth K. Hale Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at NYU and practicing Dermatological surgeon, has tips on staying cool and protected during your family fun.

• Know your UV index. Anything over 8 indicates high risk—it’s best to stay cool and out of the sun between the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Use Coppertone’s MyUV Alert iPhone application which provides you with UV Index advisories informing you about how strong the UV rays are in your region whether you’re at the pool, in the backyard or on the beach.

• Beat the heat, enjoy the pool safely. Even though a sunscreen may be labeled waterproof or water resistant, some of its potency will wash off when you get wet.

• Reapplication is key. Be sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming, toweling off, or sweating. For on-the-go, continuous spray formulas make reapplication so much easier. Try Coppertone Sport Continuous Spray 50 which especially protects the skin during outdoor activities.
