These days, it seems like women are expected to have it all. We’re supposed to have great looks, a flourishing career, a solid home life, and still have time to spend with friends and family. Am I the only one that feels like that’s a little crazy? There’s only 24 hours in a day, after all, and we do still have to sleep!

Instead of holding ourselves and our fellow women to the frankly absurd standard of “having it all,” imagine what would happen if we all began empowering each other to do our best while still investing time and energy into ourselves? Whether you want to meet your full potential every day, or just want to lay down each night with a sense of peace and accomplishment, try these three simple ways to invest in yourself – and trust me, your business, career, family and friends will all notice the difference.

Prioritize Yourself

Go ahead and read that again. I’ll wait.

While I think “hustle culture” has its place when it comes to motivating and inspiring others, it can also be taken to an extreme that glorifies burnout and vilifies self-care. Rather than seeing investment in the self as something to prioritize, women – especially mothers – tend to set themselves aside, thinking it makes them a better businesswoman or employee.

However, you can’t pour from an empty cup, and caring for yourself is the best way to make sure you still have the capacity to take care of other people. Whether it’s your kids, your spouse, your parents, or your friends, you can’t give everything of yourself to them without first looking out for yourself.

Find ways to relax each day: cook a good meal, listen to music or audiobooks on your commute, and take time to exercise and let off steam. These simple steps make all the difference in your day, and in your mental health.

Read Every Day

Speaking of audiobooks, reading a little bit each day is a fantastic way to invest in your ongoing growth and learning. Whether you’re into the news, personal or business development, or fictional stories of a specific genre, there’s always something good to be gained from picking up a book every now and then.

Long-form stories like books not your thing? Give newspapers or blogs a try! Some of us don’t have the time (or attention span) to hunker down with a novel on the regular, and that’s not a bad thing at all; as long as you’re taking information in and getting lost in a narrative every now and again, you can’t go wrong.

The most important thing is that you’re invested in learning something new. Fiction books have the power to teach us about other people’s perspectives, newspapers and blogs keep us connected with the outside world and the people around us, and personal and business development books are chock-full of takeaways that can help you take your life to the next level on every level. If you’re looking for a unique challenge, identify an area in your life where you feel like you’re struggling (whether it’s parenthood, financial management, or romantic relationships) and get a book on that topic. You’ll be surprised what you can learn, and how it can change your life!

Do What You Love

You know that saying, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life” actually does have some merit. While not every job is glamorous, there should be at least three things about your career that you love and that motivate you to get out of bed every day. They can be as small as that coworker you love sharing lunch with, or as large as your company’s overall mission and goals.

If you find yourself feeling unsatisfied with where your career is, it’s time for a change! Start researching different career options that align with your skills and experiences and start building a life for yourself that you love. No one can do that but you, and it’s well worth it to build a career that inspires and motivates you so much that it will never feel like work again!

At the end of the day, success is what you make it, and every woman has a different measure of what makes them feel fulfilled. By investing in yourself and building a life you love, you’re well on your way to crafting a legacy and meeting your full potential each and every day.
