The New Swagbucks Survey Also Revealed How Much Debt Americans Will Incur and How Long It Will Take to Pay It Off
Are men and women on the same page about their holiday shopping budget? According to a new survey by Swagbucks, a rewards- and loyalty-program company operated by Prodege, LLC, almost half of Americans admit that their spouse or significant other does not know how much they spend on holiday shopping.
The national survey of 1,000 U.S. adults was conducted online by Prodege in November 2018.
Who’s leading the charge?
When it comes to holiday shopping and budget, it looks like the old adage “men are from Mars, women are from Venus” rings true and men and women seem to have different ideas on who is in charge:
- 49 percent of men say they set the budget, while 70 percent of women say that they are in charge
- 85 percent of women say they do all of the shopping, while 46 percent of men said they are the primary shoppers
- 16 percent of men acknowledged that their partner does most of the shopping, as opposed to only 1 percent of women who say their partner is the primary shopper
- 12 percent of women and 30 percent of men say they share the holiday shopping duties about equally
Debt or no debt?
The survey also examined how much debt Americans accrue during the holidays and discovered that most Americans do go into debt during the holidays (63 percent), while 37 percent do not. Of those who do accrue debt, 15 percent said that they incur between $250 and $500. This is followed by:
- Less than $100—10%
- Over $2,000—1%
How long does it take to pay off the debt? About two-thirds pay it off in less than a month (32 percent) or within one to three months (also 32 percent).
Will that be cash or check…or a card?
Surprisingly, the most popular form of payment for Americans is cash or a debit card (72 percent). Credit cards (64 percent), gift cards (64 percent), PayPal (27 percent) and credit card points (11 percent) were also popular choices, and Americans typically use two credit cards during the holiday shopping season (44 percent).
Americans also said that the minimum discount they would consider a “good sale” is 25% off (23 percent), either 30% off or 40% off (both 15 percent), and 20% off (14 percent).
“It’s interesting to see that most Americans do the shopping and set the budgets on their own, while some make it a family game plan,” said Chuck Davis, CEO and Chairman of Prodege, LLC. “Whether it’s a team effort or a singles match, Swagbucks is the secret weapon to make sure all the holiday shopping gets done in the easiest and most cost-effective way possible.”
