Interview with Diane Grant, Speaker, Parenting Coach and Author of Brave Smart and Beautiful Communicating with Teen Daughters. This book is Worth Reading!
Diane, what inspired you to write Brave Smart and Beautiful?
Determined to make a difference in young teen lives is what inspired me to write “Brave Smart and Beautiful, Communicating with Teen Daughters”. Not wanting another teen to feel disconnected, lonely or unloved. Amazing accomplishments come from girls who are confident, who love and respect themselves and who have strong, empowering role models to help guide them through the difficulties of teen years. Who better to be that role model, than their Mother? As Mothers we have an awesome power to positively influence our daughters. From the time our daughters are born they are watching us, looking to us for reassurance, guidance and approval.
What was the most difficult or challenging part about writing the book?
The most challenging part of writing my book was making the time. It had to become important. Being a Mom of six, having seven grandchildren, and being in business with my husband, I could always find something that would take priority. It wasn’t until my husband Jim said to me, think about how many Moms and teens you can help with your book, don’t let them down.
The Most Rewarding?
The feeling of accomplishment was the most rewarding feeling for me. Taking myself back years ago when I was a teenager, and now knowing how my book and the talks I give will directly help teen girls and their Moms feel encouraged, empowered and ready to be the best they can be. This is a feeling that I will always hold dear.
Tell Us About You
I experienced a number of misfortunes throughout my young life. These misfortunes made significant impressions on me. Dealing with abandonment issues, being raised in a step-family, being sexually molested as a young girl, becoming a teenage mother, going through a divorce and becoming a step-Mom. All of these experiences have made me who I am today. I didn’t let any of these things define or destroy me. I made a promise to myself long ago to be the best Mom I could be.
Drawing on my experiences, I share candidly how Mothers can develop stronger communications with their teen daughters. I have been privileged to experience many teenagers turn into amazing, confident adults. We have an opportunity to greatly influence our teen daughters. How we choose to go about communicating with them now will determine our future relationship with them.
What are some of the key take-aways from Brave Smart and Beautiful?
