Meet Rebecca Boenigk CEO and Chairman of the Board of Neutral Posture, Inc. in Bryan Texas

In 1989, when ergonomics was a relatively new applied science, and virtually unheard of, Rebecca Boenigk and her mother, Jaye Congleton, started Neutral Posture, Inc. by manufacturing chairs based on the concepts developed by Rebecca’s inventor/engineering father, Dr. Jerome Congleton, in Rebecca’s garage.

Initially, Rebecca was Neutral Posture’s sales force, operations manager and marketing director. As the years passed and customers became more aware of their ergonomic needs, Neutral Posture became a driving force in the industry as the only woman owned chair manufacturer in the United States.  Together Rebecca and her mother led Neutral Posture from a start-up company to becoming a publicly held company in nine years.  In 1997, Neutral Posture completed an initial public offering becoming the first and only certified women-owned business to be traded on the NASDAQ and was followed in 2001 by a joint family and management buyout of public shareholders to make Neutral Posture a privately held company again.

Neutral Posture is an international company with numerous award-winning patented products.  With facilities in Texas and Ontario, Canada, Neutral Posture has become a highly imitated and respected leader in adjustable office and industrial seating products of all kinds.  As the only certified Women’s Business Enterprise seating manufacturer, Neutral Posture has rewritten the rules of quality, customer service and value with the most exceptional product offering in the furniture industry.  The commitment of Neutral Posture to manufacture truly ergonomic chairs has led to its phenomenal growth resulting in yearly sales in excess of $20 million.

As Chairman and CEO and with over twenty years of experience in research,  development, design, and the manufacturing of ergonomic seating with expertise in the areas of finance, strategic planning, HR, operations, growth, and diversity, her role may have changed but Rebecca’s focus remains the same.  She stands committed to furthering public policy concerning Women Business Enterprises, promoting Women Business Enterprises, and mentoring other women.

Rebecca has received numerous awards, including being named the Small Business Person of the Year for the State of Texas by the United States Small Business Administration in 2005 and the 2002 Office Depot Business Woman of the Year. Her company also received the UPS Supplier of the Year Award in 2004 and numerous design and innovation awards.

Rebecca is currently President of the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer’s Association (BIFMA), a member of the Belizean Grove, a member of the Committee of 200, on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), a National Founding Partner of Women Impacting Public Policy and serves on the Board of Directors of the Institute for the Economic Empowerment of Women. Rebecca was appointed by Hector Barreto in 2006 to serve a three-year term on the National Women’s Business Council, which serves as advisors to the President, Congress and U.S. SBA.   She has served on the Enterprising Women Advisory Board, Texas Buildings & Procurement Commission Vendor Advisory Council and through 2006, served on the Texas Governor’s Business Council and U.S. SBA National Advisory Council.
