From Opera Singer to Comedian to Psychotherapist
Meet Dr. Nancy Irwin, Psychotherapist/Clinical Hypnotist/Speaker/Author in Los Angeles, CA

Originally from Atlanta, where she trained as an opera singer, Dr. Nancy Irwin moved to New York City in 1985 to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian. She worked all over the country and abroad, and moved to L.A. in 1994 when she heard that Hollywood needed more blondes…
Dr. Irwin experienced an epiphany when she began community volunteer work for Children of the Night, a shelter for sexually abused teens in Los Angeles. This not only allowed her to heal the wounds from her own adolescent sexual abuse at the hand of a clergyman, but also waked up the healer in her. It prompted her to pursue a doctorate in psychology at age 42 and to specialize in the prevention and healing of child sexual abuse. She now treats victims as well as abusers, for it is her belief that “The best way to help victims is to help the perpetrators.” And yes, she is still an indefatigable volunteer for Children of the Night.
A pre-licensed psychologist and clinical therapeutic hypnotist, Dr. Irwin has been in private practice in Los Angeles for nearly 10 years, treating individuals, couples, families, celebrities and professional athletes for over 100 issues from celebrity stress to smoking cessation, sports enhancement, sexual dysfunctions, fears/phobias, weight control, and more, but it is her mission to heal the sexually abused. She also co-leads group therapy for probationed and paroled sex offenders.
To inspire others with her belief that “If I can change my life, anyone can,” Dr. Irwin wrote a nonfiction on midlife transitions, You-Turn: Changing Direction in Midlife (2008), a collection of “over 40 stories of people over 40.” As a reinvention expert and “mentalist,” Dr. Irwin is also a busy public speaker and seminar/workshop presenter on a variety of topics; reinventing the self, change, midlife transition, sexual abuse recovery, sex offender treatment, and the power of the subconscious, among other topics. A popular media guest, she’s been quoted extensively in Cosmopolitan, the New York Times, The Rachel Maddow Show, Redbook, Women’s World, and others, has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows, including The Greg Behrendt Show, My Fair Brady, The Eddie Griffin pilot, The Fashion Network, Blind Date to name a few, and is looking forward to hosting her own show soon.
Dr. Irwin is a Diplomate in Traumatic Stress, a member of the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and sits on the Education Committee of the California Coalition on Sexual Offending.
