Michele DeMeo, CRCST, CSPDT, is considered an expert in the hospital Central Sterile Supply field, a profession responsible for the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of surgical instrumentation. She is highly regarded for her management techniques, knowledge, expertise, professional product developments, and many contributions to various healthcare associations and professional publications. Beyond that, she has worked as an independent consultant, global educator, national and international sterile processing standards development contributor, author, and activist for many causes.

DeMeo is now tackling another important role — learning to find peace and live well in the face of a terminal illness, and sharing her wisdom and personal experience with the world through her newly-published book, “The Beauty of a Slow Death.” Diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2010, DeMeo was immediately faced with the reality that this terminal illness would rob her of the life she had come to know. But rather than throwing in the towel and succumbing mentally and emotionally to this debilitating disease, the diagnosis wound up serving as the impetus behind her most importantgoal thus far: to start living well, as if each day were her last.

While DeMeo is a widely-published author for some leading healthcare journals and trade publications, some may question why she chose to put her painful experience into words and carve out already limited time to author a book. Her response is aptly suited to her kind and compassionate nature: if her experience can help even one person live better and more fully, even in the face of a devastating disease or other major life challenge, then the hard work is more than worthwhile.

Indeed, “The Beauty of a Slow Death” is doing just that. Several hundred copies have already been sold and reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. “We all are on our own journey, and Michele has taken the time to share with us her journey. The honesty she has shared about her journey and her transformation is inspirational,” said Stephen Kovach, director of education for Healthmark Industries.

In addition to the many individuals who have shared how the book helped and inspired them, DeMeo’swork is also earning praise from a number of prominent healthcare organizations, including those that target ALS, and those representing hospice, palliative care, home health, and more.

“This book is a perfect reflection of what I see when people face life head on,” noted Susan Walsh, RN, ACNS-BC, regional nurse coordinator for Greater Philadelphia Chapter ALS Association. “This book is not about dying a slow death, but the choices that everyone makes to fully live the life they have.”

Although the book is about DeMeo’s experience with living with ALS and dying a slow death, she, too, believes that its core message is for everyone. “Whether we’re told we have days or months to live, or we have every reason to believe that we’ll be here 50 years or more, the bottom line is we owe it to ourselves to live the best we can,” she said. “Our life goals and abilities may change over time, but we still have the power to take charge of our lives in a positive, meaningful and productive way.”

“The Beauty of a Slow Death” may be purchased online at www.createspace.com/3805209 and also through Amazon (www.amazon.com) and Barnes and Noble (www.barnesandnoble.com).

I received Borrowed Time on Wednesday and sat it on the kitchen counter. Every time I walked by that day and the next morning I stared at it. And finally during lunch on Thursday I picked it up and started reading the back cover. And then perused the table of contents. Each chapter is short so I thought, I’d just read a chapter or two while eating my salad and then go back to work. Well, I could not put it down! In fact, I read the book in a little more than an hour (confession: I am a speed reader – so it may take the average reader a little longer).

I read about 2 books a week and Borrowed Time was not only a quick read, it was entertaining and kept my interest! We need more books like this. I loved that it was not a typical “linear” book, but was one that told about pockets of a life as oppposed to as they happened. It was refreshing.

Here is an excerpt submitted by the author:

Fitting In

You just want to fit in. When you’re a little girl of six or seven or eight or nine, that means jacks, jump rope, hopscotch. If you’re not very good at it, that’s ok, but you do have to play. At school and in your neighborhood, games set the standard for belonging. Redlight-Greenlight, Hide-and-Seek, Red Rover-Red Rover, Follow the Leader, Crack the Whip. You join in, whatever the game.

At little later, in high school, you join clubs, go to the sock-hops and football games. Wear the right saddle oxfords and sweater sets. Go the movies with the gang every week.

Get good grades and worry about college.

Later still, you marry and have children and worry about them. Go to church. Join the PTA and the Women’s Club. Play bridge or canasta. You just want to belong, to fit in.

You have friends, or at least a lot of acquaintances. You show up at the Garden Club meetings and you’re greeted, welcomed. You help with pot lucks and community projects and donate to the local charity or theater or museum. Go to the fundraiser dinners. Oh, yes.

Much later, but sooner than you could ever have imagined, you’re joining AARP and the Senior Center and thinking about retirement homes.

Much, much later, when at last St. Peter checks you in at the pearly gate he’ll give you a great big smile and say, “Welcome, my friend, don’t worry, you’re going to fit right in!”

They had a long, rough ride; then came the cancer diagnosis …

Here’s an excerpt from Hopping Roller Coasters (author interview follows excerpt):

She took the cancer hit like she was hearing dinner would be spaghetti from a jar again. I was stymied, but I was also relieved because she hadn’t gone to pieces on me. As far as I could tell, she wasn’t scared to death for me, or looking herself in the mirror, thinking she could be next, like this was Consumption or some other horrible, contagious disease.

“I can’t figure out how Marina’s taking the ‘c’ news,” I said to Paul a week later, kneeling at my pajamas drawer. “She hasn’t said anything to me. Hasn’t asked a thing.”

I’d started to wonder if maybe I didn’t give myself enough credit. Maybe I put up a better front than I thought, selling her on that cancer is not so big and bad. Or maybe I gave myself too much credit, thinking she’d see her world crumble when I told her.

That’s when I got my surprise from Paul. “Oh, it’s been on her mind,” he said. “She was asking me some rather specific questions. And apparently she was searching for answers before she came to me.”

“Like what? What was she asking?” I stopped getting dressed.

“She wanted to know things like what stage you were in. She asked about lymph nodes and wanted to know about your prognosis. She was crying.”

I was torn now. Though I hated for Marina to be sad, knowing she needed me felt good. She wanted me waiting at the end of the aisle on her wedding day. My baby wanted me around to spoil her kids rotten, like grandmas do. And to keep loving her. Even if I hadn’t always made her feel eternally safe or good inside, she still loved me.

Cancer sucks, but I had another shot at breaking the two steps forward, one step backward pattern with my daughter. I had another ‘second chance’—no matter how much longer l lived.

Rachel Pappas is a long-time writer for regional lifestyle magazines, national trade magazines, and she has a website: www.1UpOnCancer.com. Hopping Roller Coasters is her first book, and the project that has meant the most to her. You can buy the book at a discount at http://www.1uponcancer.com/rachels-memoir/ at Barnes and Noble.com or Amazon.com

Here’s Rachel’s Interview:

You’ve been a writer for 25 years; what inspired you to finally write a book?

I was hearing most of my adult life, “Rachel, you should write a book.” I thought, yeah, right. I do 1,000-word magazine articles. Doing a book would be like climbing Mt Everest. And do I really have that much to say? I got my answer when I got hit with the “You have Cancer Brick.” The story wasn’t just about getting sick. It was more an apology to my daughter. I wanted Marina to know the things I used to say over and over weren’t about me not loving her to pieces as I do. That it wasn’t about her at all, but me—my issues. My second motivation was to remind anyone who has ever loved, needed to forgive or be forgiven, that they are not alone.

What was hardest about writing Hopping Roller Coasters?

Finding a way to be brutally honest where people would understand. I didn’t’ want readers to dislike me. I didn’t want them turning the pages thinking this book’s a downer. And I DID want to break through stigmas about mental illness. It was hard to balance the darkness and the humor. To tell the story in a way where folks would hopefully enjoy the read—even say, “Hey, I can relate to some of this.”

What was it like getting through some of Marina’s lowest points?

I was swinging back and forth from numb to petrified. One day I’d wonder, “Rachel, why aren’t you worried and scared? You’re her mother! “ Then something would happen that would be like a jarring reality slap in the face. Like when she’d just moved home after a year in a residential treatment center. We were in Wal mart and I suddenly realized Marina had disappeared. I was up and down every aisle five or six times. Just after I got on my cell with her father, absolutely frantic, I saw her. She was walking toward me holding a CD, smiling.

What do you hope people will get from the story?

Many things, but these two messages come to mind immediatley:

It’s ok to stumble and fall, as long as you try to get back up. You will have more “second chances”… no matter how long you live.

Sometimes you have to redefine your idea of success for yourself as a parent, and success for your child. To see all that’s so worth loving and being proud of. When you do this, you can be more at peace with yourself and this person you love.

J. Dietrich Stroeh lost his beloved wife Margaret only three months after she was unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage Four pancreatic cancer. In his journey as her caregiver he had a lot to learn in a very short period of time and he had a lot to lose. He chronicles his journey in Three Months: A Caregiving Journey from Heartbreak to Healing (2012 FolkHeart Press). He wrote this 108-page love story and resource guide for caregivers in the hopes that his roller-coaster experiences could help others in a similar situation.

The process of preparing the manuscript which was released three years after his wife passed on helped him come to terms with life’s final passage. It also allowed him to preserve some of the last treasured memories he had of his wife and their final months together. His story is a poignant one that culminates in healing at a level that most people only dream about.

Here is what the author had to say about his book:

Q: What is your goal with this book?

A: My mission in writing this book was to share with others what I learned the hard way about being a caregiver to someone I loved. In a very short period of time I had to embrace the shocking reality that my life with Margaret was going to end abruptly and that I had to let go of her as gently and lovingly as possible. In the process I discovered there was a lot I didn’t know about how to be a caregiver. I imagine this is true for others.

Q: Why did you choose to write non fiction rather than fiction?

A: This was a very personal story and could have been fictionalized. But, I believe non-fiction was the best format because it is based on real life experiences and these are what make the story more relevant to others. Many of those who will seek out and read a book like this are looking for information about loving and caregiving someone who is terminally ill.

Q: How challenging was it to write about a family member?

A: There definitely was much to consider. Ours was a blended family and while Margaret was alive it was important to keep everyone informed of the decisions she and I made about her care and to listen to what their responses were to our choices.

Writing this manuscript, however, was a very personal process. I had to relive again and again countless doctors’ visits, tearful nights without sleep, frustrating impatience, and tender exchanges between us all.

My family was very supportive about my writing this book. They loved Margaret, too, and wanted the world to benefit from our story. Without the prodding of Margaret’s daughter Dona and my three girls, Christina, Jody and Erica, as well as the literary and editorial assistance of my colleagues, I might not have seen this project all the way through.

Q: Do you consider yourself a writer?

A: I really never did. Making notes on different experiences as they happened was how I made sure I didn’t miss important information. It also helped me come to terms with the inevitable and it productive fill up the hours I spent waiting for test results and surgery outcomes.

J. Dietrich “Diet” Stroeh is an engineer by trade. He has headed up projects great and small, and managed the Marin Municipal Water District in the midst of one of the worst drought’s on record. That experience was the basis for his first book, The Man Who Made it Rain, co-written with Michael McCarthy. He is a Director of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District and he sits on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Marin.

In his spare time he can be found working in his shop on wood projects, restoring cars, and tending to the garden as well as spending time with friends and family. He lives in Marin County with his wife. “Three Months: A Caretakers Journey From Heartbreak to Healing,” is his second book.

What inspired you to write Lose Weight Without Dieting or Working Out?

When I was in my twenties, I could eat anything I wanted and still stay slim. Unfortunately, I practiced poor eating habits: I was a junk food and fast-food junkie. When I was in her thirties, my health began to deteriorate, and as my metabolism slowed, my weight began to increase. I eventually gained forty pounds and went up four dress sizes. However, of even greater concern were the numerous health ailments and illnesses that I began to experience. So, I had to figure out a way to heal my body, get slimmer and get my life back and this book tells of my journey to lose weight and get healthy.

Have you struggled with your weight in the past?

I can recall two times in my life, in my twenties and again in my thirties, that I was very committed to losing weight so I followed all the typical advice to ‘eat less and exercise more’ but it just didn’t work for me. So, being a nutritionist, I designed a weight-loss system that has helped me and my clients shed pounds fast. The results in just a few short weeks are remarkable.

So, how is it possible to really lose weight without dieting or working out? Isn’t “eating less and exercising more” the best way to lose weight?

You cannot lose weight permanently by strictly following any special diet, by taking a weight-loss pill, or by following an exercise regimen. Diets are not the most effective way to lose weight permanently. Your goal should be to change your lifestyle, including proper nutrition and getting physically active, as a way to achieve your weight-loss goals. The book discusses how to shed pounds fast by detoxifying the body, balancing your hormones, and speeding up your metabolism. You’ll learn which foods help you stay slim and which foods cause you to get fat. If you have been on a roller-coaster ride of weight loss, you will finally be able to get off, lose weight, and stay slim for life!

Your book is based upon the Detox-Eat-Move (DEM) System? What is the DEM System?

The DEM System is NOT a diet, but a lifestyle! The DEM System is a three-phase system that allows you to get rid of stubborn body fat and reverse some of your health issues and ailments, restoring your body to optimal health.

D Is for DETOX. Get rid of toxins in the body for fast weight loss by avoiding the “Big 6 Foods” for three weeks and using other detoxification methods that eliminate toxic waste from your body.

E is for EAT. You will learn the method of eating “clean and balanced” foods to help you achieve your ideal weight.

M is for MOVE. Get moving without going to the gym or “working out” by incorporating easy ways to get physically active each day.

Since you’re in your 40s, what unique struggles do women have trying to lose weight as they get older?

Women’s bodies are extremely efficient at storing fat. So, even if you ate healthy and exercised, you will still likely struggle to maintain your current weight if you’re a woman over 35 years old. In the book, I dedicate an entire chapter called, “Stop Weight Gain During Perimenopause and Menopause” to address the hormonal imbalances that cause weight gain. Without addressing these hormonal imbalances, women will begin to store fat around the stomach, waist, hips, and thighs, causing us to look round or pear-shaped. However, we can successfully balance our hormones and lose stubborn body fat with the DEM System.

What advice can you give to someone who is struggling to lose weight?

Many of the reasons for weight gain are often outside of one’s control. It is important to understand the hidden causes of weight gain, such as hormonal imbalances, excess toxins in the body, sluggish metabolism. When many of the hidden conditions exist, traditional diet and exercise won’t work… and if it does, it’s generally temporary. 95% of people who lose weight on a diet, gain it all back within 3-5 years. So, address and correct the hidden causes of weight gain to help the body burn fat more effortlessly.

What do you hope other people will gain from reading Lose Weight Without Dieting or Working Out?

No matter your struggle or challenge in life, it’s important to LOVE YOURSELF! Self-love is essential to survival. There is no successful, authentic relationship with others without self-love. We cannot water the land from a dry well. Self-love is not selfish or self-indulgent. We have to take care of our needs first so we can give to others from abundance.

If you would know of a good book that WE Magazine for Women should review, go to http://wemagazineforwomen.com/about/book-reviews/ and follow the instructions.

Menopause is such a pivotal time in women’s lives in America that it now has a designated month (September is ‘National Menopause Awareness Month’).! Let’s face it; it’s not going anywhere; and in one way or another, at some point in her life, every woman is going to go through menopause. With this in mind, and knowing that it should not have to be a time of dread, Doctors Lovera Wolf Miller and David C. Miller wrote Womenopause: Stop Pausing and Start Living.

Womenopause is a virtual ‘makeover’ for women that is geared to helping them feel fit, feminine and fabulous – all in just four weeks! It is packed with the latest scientific information, solutions and advice that are designed to help women feel their absolute best during this vital transition.

We have become a nation obsessed with maintaining the appearance of youth – and this doesn’t help the anxiety level of the 6,000 women who are reaching menopause each day in this country. Their list of concerns just keeps growing: Will I lose my looks? Can I keep this weight off? Is my health going to deteriorate? Am I still sexy? Can I still be smart? Can I continue to be me?

Womenopause is not a ‘cure’ but it is an invaluable tool. By cutting through the hype, marketing and ill-informed opinions that have kept women on a roller coaster ride of popular trends; it presents a clear, fresh voice that offers real solutions. Womenopause invites readers into the intimate conversation that takes place between a woman and her female gynecologist.

While all women experience menopause, they do so in a unique way. Womenopause provides readers with a systematic guide that allows them to create their own “designer” treatment plan tailored to their individual needs – covering everything from hormones and hot flashes, brain and bone preservations, breast health, mood, skin, fitness, food, sleep, sex and more.

Dr. Lovera Wolf Miller is a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist, a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and a NAMS certified menopause practitioner. Dr. David Miller is boarded in pain and anesthesiology, taught neuroanatomy at UCLA, was an instructor of courses in physiology and neurophysiology, and is also a NAMS certified menopause practitioner. Please visit their informative websites at: www.womenopausebook.com and www.womenopauseinteractive.com

###

TIP SHEET:

Sharon J. Parish, M.D Professor of Medicine, Albert Einstein School of Medicine: “…it’s a fabulous book. Womenopause is a very well-rounded, comprehensive compendium on the female transition commonly termed menopause. …offers a refreshing look at a natural process that affects every aspect of the midlife woman’s health and well-being. They challenge standard social concepts of menopause as well as provide a new paradigm that focuses on vitality and wellness. The book offers a clear and understandable, yet thorough and scientifically sound explanation of the physiology of menopause and the anticipated physical, psychological and mental changes. The authors offer a well-balanced view of available remedies for symptoms including hormonal, non-hormonal-pharmaceutical, and alternative treatments. Also, they nicely discuss behavioral and lifestyle approaches. This book is a tremendous resource for any woman seeking to employ an intelligent and multifaceted approach to the Womenopause transition.”

With help from her two daughters Chris Cone and Lucinda Cone, they worked with the member’s of her writing group to compile a 144- page manuscript of original short stories which were all created in the latter part of Cone’s life.

Making her dream of being a published author a reality, Cone’s gift as a writer will be preserved, thanks to her family and literary friends. In her unique collection of contemporary short stories, her writing reminds all of us that it is never too late to leave a legacy. Not only do Cone’s characters exhibit vital, engaging, and rich inner lives, her crisp dialogue and subtle insight into the human condition deliver a delightful mix of laughter and tears.

Here is what Chris had to say about her mother’s book:

Q: What made you and your sister, Lucinda, decide to support the request to publish this collection of short stories?

A: Mary is primarily devoted to the process of writing rather than the business of publishing. Her family and writing group, however, were always interested in seeing her work published. When FolkHeart Press approached us about publishing a collection of Mary’s short stories, my sister and I were thrilled. The book project involved a team of Mary’s colleagues and family. Mary’s writing group (Amy Ingersoll Beauchamp, Claudia Bloom, Terri Tate, and Margit Liesche) assisted Mary in the selection of the stories and provided the book’s foreword; Wordsworth of Marin, owned by family friends Larry and Barbara Brauer, provided copy editing and pre-press services; Mary’s daughter, Lucinda Hitchcock Cone, provided the book cover illustration; I helped facilitate the book production; and Karen Pierce Gonzalez, owner of FolkHeart Press and a dear family friend, provided the introduction, imprint and publication services, and book promotion.

Q: Is it important for writers to see their work published?

A: I believe there is value in publishing one’s work. Not for fame or fortune, but to complete the sacred creative journey from that very personal place in which all that exists is you and the blank page to that community of readers who will find meaning in your story, novel, or article. This is why writing is an art, because it creates a bridge between the personal and the community.

Q: What message do you hope your mother’s work sends to other writers?

A: Mary focused her attention on the humanity in ordinary lives. Her stories bring insight and humor to the life journey we all share. Despite her duties as a parent, her career, and later caring for my father as his health failed, Mary, 88, kept faith with her art and produced a body of work that we are so very proud to debut with FolkHeart Press. Some, like Mary, are writers by calling. I hope my mother’s story inspires other writers to keep writing and share your work with the world. It is never too late.

Q: Do you have a favorite story? Tell us why it is your favorite.

A: “Point of No Return” is near and dear to my heart because it is based on a true story from our family. I’m not going to name names, but as I child I remember gift giving was always complicated by an eccentric relative (not my mother’s sister) who, like Aunt Lila, had a penchant for returning gifts. No matter how thoughtful or useful, all gifts were returned, sometimes the same day as in the story. And yes, it was Mary who doggedly searched for the one gift that would stick. I don’t remember if there was a happy ending to the real life story; I just remember driving back from Christmas dinner with that one lonely rejected gift tucked in the trunk, again.

Through dedication, support and a love for writing, Cone and her daughters prove that anything is possible at any age. For more on information on Moose Mash and Other Stories go to www.moosemash.com.

About Mary Hitchcock Cone: She is a fiction writer specializing in short stories and mystery novels. She began her writing career in mid-life while working for San Francisco Supervisor William C. Blake and later in the environmental field on staff with the Trust for Public Land and Nature Conservancy. In 1997 Mary joined a Marin County–based writing group inspired by author Anne Lamott, whose members meet weekly to share and critique their original fiction works. Mary was married for fifty-three years to the late Russell Cone, a journalist for the San Francisco Examiner, and raised two daughters. She instilled in her children a strong creative spirit founded on the idea that living a life of meaning is an art — that each choice, each risk, each moment of love and understanding is a colorful brush stroke on a ever evolving self portrait. She has traveled to Europe, across the U.S., and throughout California. Mary currently resides in Sacramento, California.

About Chris Cone: She is an Energy Efficiency Implementation Manager for the Climate Protection Campaign, overseeing energy efficiency initiatives for residential and commercial buildings. Chris helped develop the Energy Upgrade California™ program (one-stop-shop for building efficiency/solar generation providing education, rebates, qualified contractors, and financing). She has over twenty-five years’ experience in the publishing, journalism, and environmental advocacy.

Discover the Vedic Way to Your Life’s Purpose.” The author is my dear friend Lissa Coffey. Gotham Chopra wrote the foreword. In this book, Lissa helps us to address some big questions, including:

What is my purpose in life?

Deepak Chopra says: “An important part of our purpose in this life is to discover our purpose, and Lissa Coffey shows us how to do that in her beautiful new book “What’s Your Dharma?”

Something within each of us yearns to find meaning in our lives, and to discover the reason we are here in this time and place. The search for purpose is age-old, and it compels us to move forward, to learn and to grow. Lissa Coffey, well known for her inspiring blend of ancient wisdom and modern style, brings us Vedanta’s Four Yogas, and explores how each one can help us to define our unique purpose. What’s Your Dharma? guides us on a journey of self-discovery, and shows us how to create a lifestyle where we can express ourselves creatively and feel fulfilled.
