Answer…In a word: No. They really don’t – at least not in our culture which tends to define “success” by position, power and accumulation.

When you stop long enough to really think about the definition of success, you might find the truth is quite different:

• Money is merely a means of exchange, not a clear cut path to all your wants and desires

• What you hope to achieve is more than what you aspire to earn

• Doing what you “should” or “need” to do rather than what you love is the reason why you fail

• The problem isn’t that the goals you’ve reached aren’t good enough. The problem is that once the goal is achieved you’re standing still again. You have no more “journey.” You need a journey. You need a direction. You need a dream.

Becoming professionally and personally “fulfilled” involves a spiritual quest of recapturing – or discovering – your dreams, and money is the higher purpose that helps you foster this fuller, more balanced life. Money is the by-product of values-based ambition, which is all about living out your authentic values and beliefs. It’s what moves you from success to significance.

You are meant to give of yourself – of your energy, your unique creative expressions, your talents, and your strengths. In our current culture, success is an endpoint. But that’s not the reality. You are a creature of change, curiosity and creativity who needs to always have your goals set a little beyond your reach.

As a fulfilled woman, your greatest power is to be willing. To be willing to look at the important questions and learn the important lessons before you:

• What do I really want to do with my life? (This isn’t a question you only ask yourself when you are 18 and just starting out)

• What do I really want to use my money for?

• What are the talents that I want to develop?

As a fulfilled woman, you must be willing to do what it is you don’t want to do. There are many things that the promise of money, or the threat of losing it, induces us to tolerate. I write this without the slightest hint of judgment or reproach, because I am a woman who tolerated things at different points in my life that my more actualized self would never allow now.

As a fulfilled woman, you must work to uncover the hidden landscape of habits, beliefs and patterns that underlie and sometimes subvert how you use money and other forms of energy.

C’mon – you know what I’m talking about. How many of you have found yourself at one time or another:

• Hanging on to a job that is physically, emotionally and psychologically draining because it provided you with a substantial amount of money, good health benefits and a retirement plan.

• Holding on to a relationship because it provided you with financial security, even though it was clear to you that separation would be best for your emotional and spiritual well-being.

• Being surrounded by all kinds of information, advice and resources, and yet something stopped you from using any of it.

Whether you’re a woman executive whose corporate life feels like a tight pair of heels, a professional woman with a nagging restlessness and the desire for something more, or a woman entrepreneur looking to build a heart-based business that combines passion, purpose and profit, you need to redefine what it means to be “successful” as only you can. By moving from success to significance, your new endpoint will be a life as unique as your fingerprint.

On an episode of the NBC television show, “Who Do You Think You Are?,” film director Spike Lee lamented that he never filmed his own grandmother to try to capture her own personal stories of his family’s history. While you don’t need to be an Academy-award winning filmmaker to document your ancestry, the point to take away is: spend some time preserving those memories now and you’ll thank yourself for years to come.

Through passed down family albums, home videos, letters and documents, we discover our family history. While family is forever, the items that allow future generations to learn of the past are not. With time, precious memorabilia can degrade, fade, become damaged, or lost, ultimately denying future generations the joy of seeing a piece of their loved ones history. Fortunately, with the aid of digital technology combined with a little effort, timeless family memoirs such as weddings, births, vacations, reunions, and more, can be forever preserved. Following are some steps you can take today to ensure your own family’s history remains protected for generations to come by creating a family history library.

Getting Started

Start by gathering materials. Begin organizing, labeling and creating a timeline. Collecting all of your mementoes will help you see the past through a wider lens and certain dates, events, impressions will become clear. As you gather your touchstones of the past, attempt to label them with dates. A month and year is best, but even approximate dates, like c. 1954, autumn, or after school during 5th grade, can help put context around an image and begin to tell the story of your family.

Once you have gathered materials, decide how far back you will chronicle. Perhaps your immediate family is a large enough project for you right now. As you walk through your materials, take the time to ask yourself a few questions about your family events to help categorize your memories.  This could include general questions such as:What activities do you do when you get together?Where did you visit together that made an impression?Do any scents instantly bring you back to a place in time, such as cooking smells, flowers, ocean air, sawdust from a workshop?What games have you played with your relatives?What was the weather like on milestone days?

Record these memories on video, audio or even simply in a journal.

What and How to Preserve

Now that you’ve collected your materials, you’re probably wondering what’s next. You likely have gathered materials ranging from photo prints, to old films that you’re unable to watch with modern media equipment, to newspaper clippings. Don’t get frustrated or overwhelmed – there are many services and solutions available to help you digitize your memories and preserve them for future generations.

Create a Family Tree Mapping out your genealogy is the most obvious place to start. Ancestry.com offers a large amount of resources, links and suggestions for getting started researching your lineage. The site is also launching a Wiki http://www.ancestry.com/wiki, a user-defined online encyclopedia of sorts, to provide more insight on how to research your background.

Photos and Home Movies Repair minor to severely damaged photos with photo retouching and restoration or check Film Forever: The Home Film Preservation Guide. Convert pictures from old photo albums, home movies on 8mm film or VHS tapes of weddings, baby photos or other everyday events to DVD with YesDVD; then “future-proof” memories with MemorySafe, the digital archive companion program to YesDVD. By preserving your films and photos with MemorySafe, you can ensure that family members throughout the world, today and in the future, can find and build upon your digital library.

Family Cookbook There’s nothing like the taste of your mother’s home cooking. Create a family cook book with treasures recipes that have been passed on for generations. Ask relatives for favorite recipes such as your aunt’s brownies, grandma’s pasta sauce or uncles secret barbecue mix. Transcribe them and add photos of the chef in a book, created with traditional scrapbooking supplies or digitally with software packages.
Letters from the PastFew things are more personal than a person’s handwriting. Scan letters, holiday cards, thank you notes, as well as the timeline you developed, and save them as JPG images for viewing later, whether as stand-alone images or as part of digital scrapbooks or DVDs

Newspaper Clipping Track down old newspapers or magazines in old shoeboxes, through libraries or by calling publishing companies’ back issues departments. The Newspaper Archive website has some great resources. Save clips of announcements such as births or sports teams’ victories, or save whole front pages from milestone days such as weddings, the day you moved into your home or the day you started a new job. Again, preserve hard copies by scanning them for a digital archive.

Official documents Diplomas, birth certificates, military commendation papers, children’s artwork – virtually any official or treasured paper document can be scanned and saved as a digital file, such as PDF, for future use, whether archiving, posting on a social network such as Facebook and for personal reminiscing.
With a little effort, time and dedication you can create a family history library that will be available for future generations to build upon.

Over the past two years I have been researching and reading about women bloggers.  Prior to this listing, these women have been listed on the Virtual Woman’s Day Blog. However we have are taking another direction with that blog so I thought it would be a great idea to share these exceptional women with the readers of WE Magazine for Women.

Did you know you can reach a highly targeted audience with classified advertising?

These publishers have already developed a relationship between themselves and their readers.

You can advertise in College newspapers, employment guides, local, regional and national magazines, daily newspapers, newsletters (both print and digital) and ezines that speak to the audience you want.

These publishers have already developed a relationship between themselves and their readers.

And if they archived, you can reach even more people over time at no additional cost.

AND… there are hundreds of ezines that will “trade” advertising with the right publications.

So we have compiled a list of hundreds of places you can advertise at little or no cost.  

Costs can vary between each of these mediums, for example: newsletter advertising generally runs between $5 and $25 per issue for a 5 line ad.  Magazines can charge $10 to $75 for up to 5 lines (and more).

Before placing your ad in any of these, research the demographics to be sure that the publication is reaching your target market. Make sure your product is a good fit for the publication, Read the publication to make sure it’s values don’t conflict with yours or that there is not a flood of advertisers selling the same thing. Look for testimonials from past advertisers, see who else is advertising. Ask for a copy of publication you are interested in reviewing. You can generally get a free digital download of the online publications and many times publishers will send you a complimentary copy to review.

According to the Natural Marketing Institute (NMI), a research firm, Conscious Consumers will take the $209 billion LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) products market past the $400 billion mark by 2010.

Last month we conducted our own WECAI survey about what drives us green – if it’s a given that the market is going in that direction, then understanding the women who are motivating to buy “green” is the first step. It turns out that just like “diet and exercise” are the ultimate answers to weight loss, there are consistent motivators emerging in green consumers as well.

Our greenest SHEsponders fell into two groups, either died in the wool tree huggers from way back or those new to the green game.  I have to give kudos to those in the middle. They came into their ways during the blazing days of the 80s and 90s when many stopped caring. What’s really interesting is that less than 2% turned green this year. My take away on that 2%?  Mass advertising doesn’t work, not on our habits anyway. Think about all the TONS of green “everything” that’s out there now from Gore to non-profits  and TV stars to products. One would think that we’d all be screaming green at this point and yet…

How long have you been a Green thinker?

 Less than 1 year – 1.85%

 2 to 5 years – 44.44%

 5 to 10 years – 9.26%

 10 to 20 years 9.25%

 20+ years – 35.19%

How Socially active are you?

In our self-selected surveyed green group, 66% were bloggers and 22% were ready to join.  To me that shows a willingness to be socially engaged.  You’re the type with things to say and they aren’t afraid of saying them.

Are you a blogger? 

Yes – 66.04%

No – 11.32%

Not yet – 22.64%

We also asked, how many of you belong to ONLINE and OFFLINE groups? We were curious as business is focusing on women for our word of mouth potential. If you were trying to influence a greener world where would you go?

ONLINE 46.24% average 2-5 groups,

OFFLINE – 67.92% average 2-5 groups.

Does that mean we’re more loyal to our face-to-face groups and add more groups vs. leave and form new friends? (probably) I know that I stayed in a book club for much longer than I would have because of the friendships formed – dropping out of an Internet group doesn’t carry any social stigma.

Are you selling a green product? Intersect with the ground groups. Want a quick “buzz”? Stay online.

Who are the groups? Over 44 of the groups we joined were business related and 18 were green. We had 10 social type groups. All in all, we are taking our business lives seriously and building up our social skills and also our green connections. Granted this was a self selected group of survey takers interested in the green movement, but oddly enough no one named a religion in their “groups.” That surprised me. Perhaps we don’t see the weekly grouping around a spiritual theme as a group or maybe, the greener the crowd, the less ties to religion. What do you think?
