Answer…In a word: No. They really don’t – at least not in our culture which tends to define “success” by position, power and accumulation.

When you stop long enough to really think about the definition of success, you might find the truth is quite different:

• Money is merely a means of exchange, not a clear cut path to all your wants and desires

• What you hope to achieve is more than what you aspire to earn

• Doing what you “should” or “need” to do rather than what you love is the reason why you fail

• The problem isn’t that the goals you’ve reached aren’t good enough. The problem is that once the goal is achieved you’re standing still again. You have no more “journey.” You need a journey. You need a direction. You need a dream.

Becoming professionally and personally “fulfilled” involves a spiritual quest of recapturing – or discovering – your dreams, and money is the higher purpose that helps you foster this fuller, more balanced life. Money is the by-product of values-based ambition, which is all about living out your authentic values and beliefs. It’s what moves you from success to significance.

You are meant to give of yourself – of your energy, your unique creative expressions, your talents, and your strengths. In our current culture, success is an endpoint. But that’s not the reality. You are a creature of change, curiosity and creativity who needs to always have your goals set a little beyond your reach.

As a fulfilled woman, your greatest power is to be willing. To be willing to look at the important questions and learn the important lessons before you:

• What do I really want to do with my life? (This isn’t a question you only ask yourself when you are 18 and just starting out)

• What do I really want to use my money for?

• What are the talents that I want to develop?

As a fulfilled woman, you must be willing to do what it is you don’t want to do. There are many things that the promise of money, or the threat of losing it, induces us to tolerate. I write this without the slightest hint of judgment or reproach, because I am a woman who tolerated things at different points in my life that my more actualized self would never allow now.

As a fulfilled woman, you must work to uncover the hidden landscape of habits, beliefs and patterns that underlie and sometimes subvert how you use money and other forms of energy.

C’mon – you know what I’m talking about. How many of you have found yourself at one time or another:

• Hanging on to a job that is physically, emotionally and psychologically draining because it provided you with a substantial amount of money, good health benefits and a retirement plan.

• Holding on to a relationship because it provided you with financial security, even though it was clear to you that separation would be best for your emotional and spiritual well-being.

• Being surrounded by all kinds of information, advice and resources, and yet something stopped you from using any of it.

Whether you’re a woman executive whose corporate life feels like a tight pair of heels, a professional woman with a nagging restlessness and the desire for something more, or a woman entrepreneur looking to build a heart-based business that combines passion, purpose and profit, you need to redefine what it means to be “successful” as only you can. We all know what time suck is.  It’s when you set out to do a few tasks that you estimate an hour or two to complete.  The next thing you know, it’s evening – your day is shot and your list is longer than when you started!  Here are three tips to help you STOP wasting time and end the overwhelm.
#1 Batch Your Activities
What I mean by that is grouping types of activities together. For instance, try to get all of your errands together and completed in one circuit.  Or, if you are decorating the house, do it room by room, rather than the whole house in one chaotic effort. (Personally, I find that just a little overwhelming!) Last year, I even packed my Christmas decorations away room by room. For other holidays, I have one box for each throughout the year, and in that box, I collect everything that has to do with that holiday — cocktail napkins, the candles that go on the table, stationary, party invitations, cupcake liners, or even spices that maybe you only use for recipe during one particular season of the year.
#2.  Skip the To Do List
I think to-do lists just give us all a big long feeling of guilt and overwhelm because you have this long, long, long list.  My husband is a big to-do list maker, and when I ask him about something he says, “It is on my list.” It’s not very comforting (or successful).  Instead, when you think of something you need to do, put it on your planner or calendar. Give it a time and a date! Forget about, “I am going to do that some day,” because Someday is NOT a day of the week!  Your appointed day for your task can be flexible, in fact, write in pencil. Don’t feel like you have to be really forced to do it at that particular time, but if you are not reserving time to get it done, chances are it is not going to happen.
#3.  Practice Positive Self-Talk
One way to truly lose time is to spend it feeling inadequate, overwhelmed, or worse, actually criticizing yourself or repeating the same negative story over and over.  If you find yourself thinking about the holidays and getting anxious long before you open a box or make a gift list, stop and look at the story you’re telling yourself.  Then, try a new one! “The holidays are a time when I enjoy my family, I am going to relax, and do a little bit of catch-up and clean up and get ready for the New Year.” Now that’s a story I’d enjoy hearing over and over!

“If we all did things we are capable of doing we would literally astound ourselves.”  That quote by Thomas Edison begins a wonderful journey on his amazing accomplishments as an inventor and more importantly sets the stage for a book filled with a blueprint to help each of us through the process of innovation, Innovate Like Edison: The Success System of America’s Greatest Inventor.  Innovate like Edison was co-authored by Sarah Miller Caldicott, A great grandniece of Thomas Edison and his second wife Mina Miller Edison and Michael Gelb the world’s leading authority on the application of genius thinking and the author of nearly a dozen books, most notably “How to Think Like Leonardo DaVinci.  

ABOUT Sarah Miller Caldicott:

Sarah has been surrounded by creativity and innovation throughout her life.  When she was seven years old, Sarah learned of her unique relationship to her great great aunt Mina Miller, and Mina’s world-famous husband, Thomas Edison.  Curious about why the Edison phonograph and cylindrical records in her home worked so differently from the small plastic record player that spun 45’s and wax LP’s, she wondered, “How did they get this way?”

Intrigued Sarah went on to learn about the accomplishments of Mina Miller Edison’s father – Sarah’s great, great grandfather, Lewis Miller (1829-1899) – an agricultural equipment inventor whose Buckeye Mower & Reaper dramatically improved the productivity of American farmers in the 1850’s and beyond, later inspiring development of the modern Combine Harvester.  A recipient of 92 patents, Lewis Miller was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006, and co-founded the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York in 1874 – a place Sarah and her family still visit every year.

Sarah received her MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business, and began her 20-year career as a Marketing executive with brand-driven firms including Pepsico and Unilever. For 12 years, Sarah spearheaded domestic and international rollouts of mass brands including Cycle, Suave, Salon Selectives, and Degree.

Desiring to pursue more entrepreneurial projects, in 1998, Sarah established StarWave Associates, a strategic marketing and branding consultancy assisting CEO’s and business owners in transforming the growth of their brands. StarWave clients have included DHL Global Mail, Cox Enterprises, Andrx Pharmaceuticals, Shay Financial Services, and Lucent, as well as numerous entrepreneurial firms. 

Sarah speaks to audiences across the country, and leads executive seminars on how to embed Edison’s Five Competencies of Innovation in their organizations.  These competencies propelled Edison to generate a record-breaking 1,093 US patents and 1,293 international patents over 62 successive years.
